Magnetic lock vs electric strike: choosing a lock for access control
Fail-safe vs fail-secure, exit buttons, fire alarm integration and backup power.
Select Security1 min read

Two main types
- Electromagnetic lock (maglock) holds the door only while powered. This is fail-safe: the door releases on power loss.
- Electric strike / bolt lock can be fail-safe or fail-secure; a fail-secure lock stays locked without power.
How to choose
- Escape routes generally require a fail-safe solution.
- Server rooms, stores and rooms with valuables often use fail-secure.
- Glass doors need dedicated brackets.
Safety elements
Install an exit button and an emergency break-glass release on the inside, and integrate the system with the fire alarm so doors unlock during an alarm. Use a power supply with battery backup.
