Fiber optic links for CCTV: when 100 meters is not enough
Media converters, SFP modules, single-mode vs multi-mode fiber.
Select Security1 min read

When fiber is needed
A copper Ethernet segment is limited to 100 meters. In large warehouses, plants and links between buildings, fiber covers much longer distances and is immune to electromagnetic interference and lightning-induced surges.
Key components
- Media converter: converts copper Ethernet to fiber.
- SFP module: plugs into a switch SFP port.
- Single-mode: long distances (kilometers).
- Multi-mode: short distances, typically within a building.
Important rules
- Modules at both ends must match (wavelength, fiber type, connector).
- Single-fiber (BiDi) modules are used in pairs with opposite wavelengths.
- Respect the minimum bend radius of the cable.
